When in doubt, you can always plant them sideways. They will figure out for themselves which way is up, and will bloom normally. That makes it easy!

If you look at an onion (for example), it is tear drop shaped. You would plant the fat end down, with the skinny end up. Sometimes when you leave an onion too long, it starts to sprout. You'd plant the larger end without sprouts in contact with the soil. That goes for all bulbs, daffodils, tulips, etc.
Some bulbs are actually cormbs, another type of 'root'. It doesn't matter which end you plant cormbs. Cyclamen produce cormbs.
Bulbs prefer to be planted with their roots down.
