Is it possible to "winter over" certain fountain grasses that are considered annuals?

Grasses such as purple fountain grass and others that are not hardy enough for zone 5 planting???

Answers:
Since ornamental grass usually dies to the ground at the end of the season, I think your best bet would be to mulch it over about six inches or so for winter, and to make sure it is planted in a more secure location like next to the house or somewhere where it will be protected from a lot of wind. The grass will die down to the ground but you will have to cut it low instead of leaving the dried grass on it like most people do, they usually remove the dried top growth in the spring, That way you'll be able to mulch it over easily. If you can protect the roots and keep them alive then you have a pretty good chance. I hope this works out for you and best of luck!

best thing to do is go down to a nursery and ask someone there.

Pennisetum or fountain grass has several types that are perennial and will over winter to regrow in spring.

other types are annuals, but self seed and will sprout quickly in spring. you will just need to thin these leaving only the clumps you want to remain.
