How deep does the sand in the Sahara desert go?

I know this probably sounds like a silly question, but sooner or later, there has to be some dirt, right? And when does the sand end and the dirt begin so that there is only dirt in places like the U.S.?

Answers:
That's a very interesting question. I think the sand extends all the way down to the bedrock (the layer that's normally under the 'dirt').

That's a very interesting question, I probably never would have thought of that. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. Good luck finding it!
The sand extends down to what is known as sandstone (compressed sand that has become rock). After that, there will be layers of rock of varying type and density, depending on where you 'dig'.

Under all that sand is the same types of rock that are found anywhere in the world. The sand layer is measured in feet. It may be 10, 20, 30 feet deep. Relatively shallow, compared to the thickness of the Earth's crust.
