My Lawn has been Overrun with Crabgrass! What's the best way to get rid of it?

I have tried using the fertilizer with weed killer in the spring. Earlier this week, I used a spray. However, it rained right after I sprayed and the crabgrass now appears as healthy as ever. It's very frustrating, because it grows so fast that even mowing once a week isn't enough, and the lawn just looks terrible most of the time...

Answers:
Crabgrass is an annual weed, which means that it completes its entire life cycle in one season. It starts brand new from seed each spring, therefore the key to its control next year is here. Use what's called a "pre-emergence" crabgrass killer. This product establishes a short-lived chemical barrier on the soil which kills crabgrass seedlings just as they begin to grow. Timing is important. There are ways to kill crabgrass once it has gained a foothold, but they are much more difficult and require patience.

Crabgrass thrives where summers are hot and very moist. Water your lawn deep and infrequently. Keep mowing often. You can also apply DSMA, MSMA, MAMA when the weeds are small and easier to control. One or more repeat treatments at 7 to 10 day intervals may be necessary. Go to your local lawn chemical store to pick up any of these.

Patience and diligence will prevail in your situation. Be strong :)

You were on the right track w/the spray providing you were using the right product. You need a combination of a broad leaf herbicides and fertlizer. This spray will kill the larger leafy weeds like crabgrass, while causing no harm to the grass. In combination with the herbicide, you also need to fertilize the lawn. A strong, healthy stand of grass will help to choke out the crabgrass.

Good Luck.
You can really only get rid of crabgrass before the rest of your grass grows in the Spring. You need to put on a pre-emergent killer early on since it's one of the first grasses to grow. Once the rest of your lawn starts growing there's nothing you can do unless you want to spray Roundup and kill the whole lawn and start over with new seed. Good luck!
