Hi and welcome to alot of work and even more enjoyment. As for dogwoods, the information about is more than adequate except I did want to mention they also have pink blooming dogwoods as well as the traditional white. Hostas, begonias and geraniums all love the shade. There are a variety of bulbs other than the usual lilys that work well in shade gardens also. You mentioned wanting plants that will return next year so be sure to look for perennials when visiting the nursery. If areas of your yard get afternoon or morning sun, you'll also be able to choose from a number of plants that thrive in partial shade. However, if the yard is shaded pretty much of the time, I'd mix in some ferns for texture and color variation with a number of blooming plants. Happy gardening...the beauty of it is a garden is everchanging. Try different color combinations until you create one you're happy with!
