Should I dig an underground tunnel?

If you want to dig a tunnel then why not.
Is there any purpose to your tunnel or is it just something you fancy doing?
When I was a kid we dug a tunnel out from under the house, we were aiming to get it as far as the woods about 100 meters away but it only ever got about 40 meters. Took us a couple of years by which time just about everyone in my year at school had been down it or dug part of it.
My folks never found out about it until years after I'd moved out and they were selling the house, it only got found by the surveyor.
There was one occasion when my Mum came home early from work and there were about 20 of us down there at the time (not all in the tunnel but in the void under the floor).
On another occasion when we'd started digging the vertical shaft it was getting pretty deep and we'd got a full length ladder but it got jammed with about 4 feet sticking up out of the floor. Me friend went down head first to try and free it and fell and got stuck. We had to hose away the dirt to free him.
The whole thing was pretty crazy but it was well done, we had ventilation, electric lighting, tracks for pulling bogeys along, pulleys for hauling dirt out. We were lucky as we were tunneling through clay so it was really secure, the only thing we had to do was keep the clay moist to prevent it drying out and contracting.
If you are serious about your tunnel get some safety advice first and I hope you're not claustrophobic.

I think my neighbors a digging a tunnel to connect each others house. So go ahead and do it.
