I am trying to grow walnut trees from walnuts, any direction?
Answers: They need winter chill to sprout, this is call stratifying. You can plant your walnuts a couple inches underground right now. Or you can put them contained by a moist paper towel contained by a baggie in the refrigerator for the winter. This will prevent squirrels from getting them. Then plant them within the spring when squirrels are less of a problem. RScott
Yes, dampen it a lot. And don't plan on moving to another house inside about 20 years. Because thats how long walnut trees rob to grow tall and grow walnuts. Good luck. :)

If North American black walnuts and you live in an nouns that gets winter, simply plant a fresh walnut surrounded by a pot with soil, sink the pot into the ground and cover near metal screening and straw to prevent squirrels from stealing the nuts. Leave in the ground over the winter. They will germinate contained by the spring.
