Heat.oil co. said my bill extra high because I was gone, made thermostat 60 degrees? True? Said no air circ.?

I was away for a month. Turned the thermostat to 60 degrees to save heating oil. The bill for the month was horrendous. When I asked, the company said it was because "there was no air circulation" and the furnace worked extra hard. This does not make sense to me. Should I run a fan when I turn the thermostate down when I am gone for any length of time? What is the best way to conserve heating oil when I am gone? Thank you.

Answers:
If there was no circulation within the house the furnace may have to work harder. If the temperature sensor in the thermostat was far from the furnace than no circulation would keep the heat from reaching the thermostat so the system would keep thinking that it is below 60 degrees while the furnace is overworking to make up the difference between the sensed temperature and the set temperature.

I asked my husband who works for an oil company and he said he's never heard such a thing. That ofcourse does not mean that its not correct but that we are in agreement with you. I would try calling another company and asking a hypothetical question. The circulation makes no sense to me because if there is no circulation it would be easier for the room to maintain a constant tempature therefore less work for the furnace because it would not have to turn on as much. Ofcourse this is just my opionion and based on nothing more than my way of thinking. LOL.. I would call another company.. Ive actually heard in the past TO turn your heat down to 60 degrees if you are leaving for any length of time. Best of luck to you.
