Why does the kitchen sink and dishwasher in most homes not run through the water softener system?

Answers:
the dish washer SHOULD be tied into the hot water side of your kitchen supply if your dishwasher is to work properly....if a home has a water softener at all then the water heater will be tied into it so therefore the dishwasher will be tied into the water softener. Some folks run the cold to the kitchen sink as raw (un softened) water, the reason is simple. Softened water tastes terrible.

Everything in our house runs through the water softener. There is one switch on ours that we can turn to divert from the softener if we are watering the lawn or something. Otherwise, it is on for all water.
Maybe the previous owners didn't want to pay to soften all of the water in the house, just the shower for soft skin or something. My house is whole-house all-soft, unless I throw the bypass.
