220 volt ac vs two 110 volt procession?

I have a true 220/240 rope running from the pole that powers my house. One 220/240, one neutral, two seperate 110/120s. So i own 4 wires coming into the access panel . My question is: I enjoy heard running appliances that obligation 220/240 run better,cooler, more effecient from a true 220/240 than two 110/120 combined. Wondering is this true? My water electric fire and ac/heater unit (inside and out) are wired next to the true 220/240 wire.


Answers:    Simply put you compensate for watts.

If you have a 3500 watt nouns at 240V it will draw 14.6A

Same load at 120V will draw 29.17A

Here, using 240V will clearly use smaller quantity current, allowing you to use smaller conductors. As long as you don't have excessive voltage drop on any the 120 or 240V arrangement you are not going to see any real difference between them.

Also, at the nouns there is not going to be any improvements within efficiency, 240V won't trade name the load run any cooler or better as long as the voltage is inwardly limits. In other words if you own a piece of machinery that can run at either 120 or 240V and its wired for 120V operation and you provide it near 120V you will see no difference in running if it is wired for 240V and it is provided with 240V.

Higher voltages are used newly to provide the same amount of power but use smaller amount current. You use less current you bring back less voltage drop across a procession and are able to use smaller cheaper conductors.

Contrary to what the other poster said, you do NOT payment for amps. You pay for watts, in fact watts over time, watt-hours. Its why you have a watt-hour meter.

I don't really realize what you mean by have two 120 combined though. If you combine two 120's that are 180 degrees out of phase you acquire true 240. There is no 240V to neutral available contained by the US.

The only article I can think you may hold from your description is a 3 phase delta service with a large leg. In this case the illustrious leg would have 208V to the colourless, but this leg should not be used for line to indistinct loads and should only serve vein to line 240V loads.
The idea for using 220/240V for AC, water heaters and voluminous air compressors is that contained by order to start the motor, it take a lot of power (AMPS). If 110 Volts be used, the amps requirement will increase tremendously. This will require very full-size and expensive cables to button the power and to.dissipate the heat generate.

In basic electrical view, there is an inverse relationship between Voltage and AMPS. By doubling the voltage, the AMPS requirement will end significantly.

If you look at your electric bill, the charge you pay for nouns usage is directly related to AMPS.
