How do you get rid of tree stumps chemically?

Stump removal guys charge an arm and a leg, and our town has ordinances against burning. Does anyone have an idea for getting rid of an old tree stump chemically, or some other way?

Answers:
If you can't dig the hole yourself to remove the old tree stump, you can pound copper nails (MUST be copper) into the old stump, that will kill it, then you can pretty much remove it as it deteriorates.

Actually - just a word about your previous question about boxwood - if you cut any substantial pieces off don't forget that the timber is very sought after - especially laarge diameter bits, don't burn it or just let it sit, contact your local wood turner and he will beat a path to your door
