I own an mtd with 38" deck and you requirement to remove the deck. Its not a very difficult work , but getting the spring back on is a rock-hard job. You really call for a spring puller.

I own alot of lawntractors- i have to voice MTD decks are the worst to remove, due to the massive spring on the back of the deck . I suggest you remove the deck to take the edge off changing the belt - theres approaching 4 pins on each side and one adjustment rod near a pin. Id suggest removing the spring first, remove the pins, then the significant pin holding the 'locator pan ' on the backbone. The belt will need to come sour the drive pulley, by removing the two bolts that hold the belt onto the pulley.Before removing the old belt, check the routing.
