If you are only going to have one return air grille it only has to be 20 x 20 or 20 x 25 and I would make it a filter grille. You also do not have to leave your doors open, you can cut the bottoms of your doors off 2 inches off the floor, and you will get plenty of air back to your unit. This is standard practice thruout the HVAC industury. Good Luck.

if you keep all doors open and use one central return grill it will have to be 36 inches by 36 inches square--so maybe split them up around the house for better flow--14 by 14 or even 12 by 12 in 3 areas around the house--opposite end of the house if possible
just remember--too many returns are not bad--the more air you can move past the coils the faster it will cool
