How do you know is the best contractor to install vinyl siding?

I own a very old home and the old siding is that wide stuff that looks like compressed wood squeezed together to make about a 12 inch piece of siding. I am female, single and own my own home. I am not sure whether to have the old siding removed or how this all works. Any suggestions appreciated. I think vinyl would make my house nicer.

Answers:
Be sure to use a licensed contractor and do not pay more than 10% down, if any prepayment is required. Pay the balance only when you are satisfied that the job is done to your satisfaction. Also check you contractors performance with your local Better Business bureau prior to committing. Check with at least 3 different contractors to get a bid and a recommendation of the work that is necessary. Ask your friends if they have had this done and what their experience was.

vinyl siding is a good choice i would go to a local lowes, or home depot and ask the people in the " contractor sales " dept. who they sell the most siding to and or who they know that is good....

lic. gen. contractor

If you are asking "How do you know WHO is the best contractor"?
There is no way anyone can say Joe Blow inc is the Best.

I am afraid you will have to go on someone's reccommendation.
As contractors are people - we have all made mistakes.
You can limit your list by someone who has been doing vinyl siding and only vinyl siding for more than 10 years.
I would not refer you to someone like sears - as they are known for using sub-contractors of well I won't say questionable history.
But you may have a good one in your area - call them and get a quote - just for starters
do not sign anything untill you get at least 3 bids...
