Does anyone know how to fix a deadbolt lock?

My husband was being funny and was holding it locked so I couldn't get in, ha ha ha. Now, from the outside, the key won't go in all the way to turn. It works fine from the inside, locks and unlocks, but we want to lock it from the outside. Help please. Serious answers only.

I'm a full time locksmith and chances are that you had a single cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn on the inside.what happens in a case like yours is the tailpiece that turns the bolt in the middle of the lock probably bent. Its a very common problem with cheaper locks, chances are it would probably cost you more to repair it at a lock shop than it would a new lock. My recommendation is to go to your local lock shop and ask him for a Arrow E-61 deadbolt add US3 or 26D to the end of the part # to verify what finish you'd prefer [US3= brass & 26D= brushed chrome]. Arrow hardware is light commercial and holds up very well on residential but, you can only get it through a locksmith. Anyway, if your gonna keep your existing lock and fix it just back off the screws a bit and straighten it out and make sure the tailpeice and the tailpeice clip isnt bent or broken. hope this could help, good luck!

loosen the screws a little on the deadbolt...Also make sure the dead bolt isnt hitting the strike plate when you are trying to turn the key...The knob is much easier to turn than the key so if its hitting just a little it is really hard to lock

It could be because part of the lock mechanism is bent or just out of alignment.
Did you try to spray some lubricant into the deadbolt mechanism? You could also take the deadbolt out of the door and give it a good cleaning, lubrication and inspection. Any damage should be visible.

if the key wont go in it is a problem with the tumblers (the pins that the key lifts) unless you have an expensive lock like a Medeco, it will be cheaper to buy a new one at the home improvment store, but for real security go to a locksmith and get a high security lock Medeco are some of the best virtually pick proof but expensive
