What do you do if your carpet is wet and you have no idea why?
Answers:
I cannot visualize the kind of place you live in. But most likely I would blame the dining room, since there's always liquid laying around, from the sink, cups of water left out, etc. That can be one option. The more realistic option would be that probably your dining room is over some pipes which carry the water from the sink to the drain, this may mean that if there are pipes under...they might be broken and leaking.
I'd suggest you double check where the water is coming from. If it's smells, you will pretty much get an idea of where it comes. You mentioned your cat...trust me, if it was your cat urinating in your carpet, your whole dining room would be smelling really bad. Cats' urine is mega strong, almost like a cologne. If it's sticky and sweet smelling, might be a drink someone knocked over. Otherwise, I'd say it would have to do with pipe lines under your dining room...but double check.

If my carpet is wet and I have no idea why I kick my dog. You should kick your cat.
ask your partner has he been cheating if not then put a cork up your cat
Is your cat old? incontinence could be a problem.
Is your cat ill?
Is your cat male and marking their territory?
Are you in a flat? It could not be your cat at all but a leaky roof from the flat above!!
Unknowing what is under there would completely creep me out.
I hope you own your home 'cause you have to steam clean that carpet- if that doesn't work tear that carpet out. Quick before mold starts.....By the way did I leave the hint that I am a germ freak. ...sorry. Best of luck to you.
You may be sleep walking and not making it to the toilet.
There could be a leakage under your floor, take the carpet up and investigate.
If you live on a concrete slab (meaning no basement or crawlspace) you could have aleak from a supply line or a sewer line leading out under the house.
If you have a basement or crawl space the likleyhood is that a line is under the house and close tot he floor boards and not on the ground, this can also be a pipe leak but easier to fix.
Lift the carpet and pad and examine the surface of the floor underneath. Sounds like a slab leak.
Get on your knees and sniff it.Good old fashioned water with a touch of washing up liquid.spray it with something ant-bacterial.dont use bleach or you will ruin your carpet.I have 2 cats but they go out.Ive had occasional accidents.Give carpet a good scrub.just keep spraying and scrubbing
Check for plumbing leaks...from the ceiling above, or possibility of broken pipes below. The funny odor could be mold growing in or under the carpet.
If the funny smell smells like ammonia or urine - then the cat could be marking in the house as a behavioral issue, or a medical issue making him not able to wait until he gets outside.
start worring
If the carpet is wet near a wall, there is a chance that you have a leak in a pipe that runs inside the wall. Is the kitchen next to the dining room?
