Yes over time the carbolic acid will eat through metal pipes of all kinds. That's why its best to replace old or leaky stuff with pvc or the new one called QUEST.
Ps. Have you ever seen the pictures of underground caverns where they go for miles underground. If it can eat through solid stone what's a thin little tube going to do.

Hard water will not cause pinholes or corrode. What it will do is form a build up and over a long period of time actually clog a pipe. Hard water is either calcium or magnesium or both. It is the same build up you see on your shower or sprayer on faucet.
Acid water or water with a low ph will cause pinhole leaks and corrosion, so will coupling that go from metal to copper. So will grounding electricity to pipe.
Hard water can be fixed with a water softener. A crosion problem is a little harder to fix cause you have to know more about what is causing the corrosion. For more info, email me.
Hard water alone should not deplete copper tubing. what will deplete the copper pipe is "aggressive" water. Whats aggressive water? Water with a low pH, acidic, containing corrosive agents. Now, if your on a public water supply, chances are the water is not aggressive, if your on your own well, It could very well be aggressive. If your on a public water supply, call the water company and ask to have your water tested. If your on a your own well, call a local environmental lab that test water and have a Languor Index test done. this test will cover all the parameters for aggressive water .
