first turn off the power to the heater via the circut panel in you house. second turn off the water supply, and output on the heater. third drain the tank (most heaters have a hook up at the bottom of the tank for a hose)
check to see if you have one or two heating elements in your tank. if you have two note which one came from the top and which one is from the bottom. take them both to lowes, home depot, hardware store, and get replacements. install neww elements, then turn water back on, then restore power to the heater, and you are done.

dgr0919 has given you the proper steps,but I would like to add a few things. Check the watts of the element. It will be on the water heater and on the element itself. 35 45 or 5500 watts. Never replace with a lower watt element. Make sure you completely fill the water heater before turning on the power or the element will short. Bleed the air out through the hot side of your tub valve.
