Water Softener Maintenance?
Answers:
First things first:
1. you need to know the capacity of your TANK this is the part of you system that holds salt. that's the only way I can describe it because there are two different types.
a. water softener and salt tank are two seperate units(physically)
b. there is only one tank. the softerner(round cylinder) and the salt tank(athe salt goes around the cylinder inside the tank.
2. when the unit was installed the installer shouldhave tested the hardness of your water(this allowed him/her to determine when to have the unit recycle(it makes no different if unit is "automatic" or manual)
salt: your system is designed to hold some amount of salt(a small unit may only hold one bag(realllly small)) my unit holds 400 pounds of salt
3. you need to establish how much salt you use. you need to schedule a time(weekly/monthly etc) to check your unit to see if it needs salt. then add salt on the schedule you have established
4. as long as you feel "slick" like there's still soap on your skin, and you're not "squeaky clean" then the units working. if you get squeaky then it's not working.
5. you use only about 1/4 the amount of laundry soap you normally use.

I usually have to add a 40# bag every other week. I keep the tank about half-way full, and by adding that 40# bag, it generally maintains that height in the tank.
there should be no water in it.....u can be safe if no fill lines to fill it up half way.....mine holds 6, 40 lbs bags, plus if u set it up and it has a LED read out u can set an alarm to let u know when to add more......
