How do i stop chipboard floorboards from creaking?

Turn on the stero...... Seriously if this going to be a permant thing you would need to replace the boards that are squeaking, making sure you have the floor oiled and treated. since you are getting carpet in a week your going to end uo just dealing with it.

Find out where the joists are below the floor and put lots of screws through the floorboards and into the joists..
try brushing on linseed oil .but only a thin coat
A carpenter told me that talcum powder stops the creaking noises!
Screw the board down with long Drywall screws, glue is great if the board was not already down. Part of this problem is the board being to tight- when you step on the board that is unsupported, like between Joist, it to can squeek, if a spot like this is in the traffic area- if possible, nail a support from underneath, if not, use a saw blade and try to get a little material out along that crack, so it does not touch.
We went through a large box of screws when the carpets were replaced screwing down the boards under the carpet. This got rid of all of the squeaks at first.
Now that a few years have passed a few squeaks are back :(
I think the idea of gluing them is great - if the boards were not down already.
1. if you have steel as your floor joists, tighten the bolts and weld it inderneath to avoid loosening the fasteners.
2. if your floor joists are wood planks or lumber, check the nails and the stability of the main carrying member. creaking sound comes from unstable support.
3. in both cases, also check your floorboards. you may need to renail them or change them.

The boards should have been nailed down with ringshank nails, if they are they only need to be punched in an 1/8 of an inch or so, you could also add a few screws, but nails will still need to be punched to stop the squeak, be carefull not to screw through any wires or pipes that are too near the surface (put there by bone idle plumbers and sparks) Linseed oil or talc wont do anything for long, if at all ! you may always get a little noise, but should not be that bad, im a joiner so if you need anymore advice get in touch.

Remove each board in turn, then use candle grease on the joints, screw boards down...in more places than before. Otherwise, you have a cheap burglar alarm, used in the nightingale shrine, Kyoto, Japan 16th century, still works now!
