Window a/c compressor kicks off and the air temp is still HOTT! Why?
Answers:
Go outside and blow or wash the condensor coil. excessive head presure is common cause for overload to click the compressor out. Feel the top of the compressor to see if is hotter than normal. may be under charged as it relies on return refrigerant saturated gas for motor windings to stay within designed limits. on the trouble lists are capacitors, thermistors, relays, overload klixon etc. check level of unit, sometimes drain water has level higher to be slung by cond. fan blade to help cool unit in this heat-wave especially.
Other answers:
check outside to see if there is any frost on the compressor

Compressor could be going out, could be low on freon, or the thermostat could be going bad, could be lots of things really.
Good luck
do you have it on the cool setting ? it is probably low on gas
Go out side and look at the coils. That is the little tubing that is behind the fins. Are they dirty? if they are you need to clean 'em. Here is how- First- unplug the unit. (very important)
sencondly- you may have to pull the unit out of the window. (it comes out inside the house) But I would try cleaning them out side while it is still hangin' in the window first. You need alot of pressure- but be careful cause you can fold over the fins and that can cut off the air flow. Hold your water hose a couple of inches away from the fins and spray straight in going horizonally very slowly startind at the top. But be sure you arent messin' up the fins cause you dont want that. If they arent clean when you look in side the cover , you need to pull the unit and then clean the coils. It is alot easier with out a screen or cover on them. So after getting all wet and dirty. you need to let it dry for a few moments and take it back in and re-install it in the window- is it staying on now? If not your t-stat may be going out, and I hate to tell you this but the window- units are not worth repairs so, you need to throw it away if it is not under warenty- and go buy a new one. And remember to change the filter monthly (at least) and keep the coils clean when ever they start getting dirty- good luck- and stay cool!!
