A child safety outlet cap broke in the outlet and I can't use the outlet anymore. How do I clear it?

We just purchased a new home, and I was going to install the carbon monoxide detector in the hallway when I noticed that the outlets can't be used because both outlets had prongs of a child safety cap break inside the outlet. They are really deep in there. Is there anyway I can fix this so I can use the outlet again? This is the ideal place to put the carbon monoxide detector. Thanks for any advice or ideas!

Answers:
Yes quite easily. First, make certain all electricity to that outlet is off!! There is a tool to test this where you only have to touch part of the outlet and not the inside. See a hardware store for this. (If you don't want to do this, just shut off the main breaker. There will be no electricity to any part of the house at all!) Then using tweezers, gently work the pieces out of the holes. If the pieces are too far in, remove the outlet and replace it. The wiring part is very simple. Just copy the wiring method from the old one to the new one. Turn the electricity back on.

I wou;ld shut off every circuit breaker to be sure there is no electrical current and only then unscrew the cover plate on the outlet, use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull them out.
Remember too, it may have blown a fuse when the thing broke off in there, so you may have to replace the fuse. before the outlet works again.

TURN OFF THE BREAKER THAT CONTROLS THAT OUTLET. TEST TO BE SURE WITH A LAMP. USE A PIN OR PLIERS TO REMOVE THE BROKEN PIECE OR REPLACE THE OUTLET. IT'S ONLY THREE WIRES.
the easiest way to fix the issue is to shut off the power at the breaker box and remove the old outlet and replace it with a new one they cost about .58 cents and it will take you about a min. to do...
I would have to agree with anyone that says that you should replace the outlet. It isn't worth the time or aggravation to try and clear the outlet. Besides, you could break it and have to replace it anyway.
