how do you know if a broken refrigerator is the thermostat or the compressor. the motor is runnin , not cold.?

Answers:
You can usually get a repair guy in for $25 or so, check your yellow pag es. We get coupons in the mail.

If it is the compressor, buy a new refrigerator, it won't be worth it to repair as it costs at least $500.

If the motor is running, then the compressor is running.

What could be the issue is that you could have a coolant leak, which would mean that there isn't any refigerant in the system. This would mean that the fridge could be on but not cooling.
the thermostat is what turns the motor on and off, so that's fine. It sounds like you may have a bad compressor, or else all the refrigerant has leaked out.
It's out of freon.
yyou just have to gass up the fridge.

the gas probally is used up and you have to replace it.

Get a fridge techniction for that
its probaly the stuff that makes it cold, and i can't spell it,it sounds like free on.
When our compressor went out, it started blowing hot air into the freezer section instead of cold.
If it's running and not cold you've probably lost your gas which isn't worth fixing. The comp will burn out soon w/out it.
the thermostat is what controls the temperature in a refrigerator, thus in relation to you question your thermostat has gone bad. this can easily be replaced.
Check your coolant lines if you can. See if there looks like any type of frost/ice build up on it. You can check for leaks with soapy water by putting the soapy water on the tubes and look for air bubbles. If this is the case, they may try to sell you a new fridge. By the way, the motor is the compressor.
Could in fact be the thermostat or lack of freon. We just had the same thing happen Friday, and are fortunate that we rent. They replaced the unit with a brand new one.
check the freezer first. is it cold? then you have a circulation problem with the air. does the motor ever shut off? if no then you are low on freon. did you just move and upset the fridge? if so turn it off and let it sit one day. if you didn't do anything and it's 10 years old then call repair.
its out of gas
If the freezer side is cold but Not the fridge then it is the fan that moves the air from the freezerside into the fridge side. Very small cost to replace this little fan. They (repairmen) want to tell you it's the thermostat (expensive) or the freon (also expensive).
I've had it happen twice on the same refrigerator! Second time I replaced the fan myself. Very simple job. Good luck! -Laura
