I have a dirt devil with the bag and there is a burning smell, how do you get rid of the smell?

When i try to vacuum the burning smell is so strong, plus the motor area is lit up like it is on fire.

Answers:
got something stuck in the belts or motor, take it apart carefully and clean it out then put it back together if it still does it then its time for a new one

Other answers:
Get a new one.
Get a new one.
check teh belt, sounds like it is bound up somehow and burning. OR the motor needs a good cleaning out.
Sounds like the belt has broken - replace it !
Your belt is sticking. It will soon break. It is rubbing, and that burninig of the belt is what you are smelling. Replace the belt and oil the pulley mechanism.
baby before you burn the house down get a new one please
thunder_kok says check belt and head area for hair, string, etc.

Sounds like the fan belt is broken and you need to just go get another vacuum. Without the fan, the motor heats up too hot and can cause a fire.
I WAS going to say to get a new roller belt, but if the motor is "lit up", I'd get rid of the puppie. Something is cooked, and it's dangerous.
Sounds like the belt is binding against the motor. Just take it apart as best you can, with it unplugged of course, and replace the belt and also clean out any hair and other junk that is most likely in there.
