$$ estimates for rewiring a house?

I live in an old house and the other day I had to call an electrician because of a problem with the breakers. he told me that I had to rewire the house, and he told me it would cost me $4,000.00. I need advice, please

First of all get a second and third opinion on that Electrician's claim. Not saying that electricians are crooks, but there are crooks in all lines of work.

I had a plumber (Yes - one who was in the Plumbers Union) tell me that my pipes were leaking and needed to be replaced. There was green residue on many of the pipe fittings. Folks - this does not mean your pipes are leaking. It's leftover flux from the original plumber who didn't clean up his work very well.

Anyway, the cost to re-wire a whole house is going to depend on the size of the house, number of circuits, whether or not Romex wiring is acceptable by code in your area (versus, conduit piping required in some counties), and several other factors including the relative access that is available. E.g. an unfinished basement with visibility to all of the wires extending from the main panel and an open attic, etc.

$4,000 to rewire a whole house sounds pretty cheap... so I am guessing the electrician must be just wanting to replace the breaker box or some portion of the wiring....

Biggest suggestion that I have is talk to several different electricians from different companies. Get their independent opinions.

Good luck.
