Heat pump will not turn off!?

I had a Trane heat pump installed last year. This winter even though I was using mostly wood heat, I noticed my heat pump was running. My power bills were fairly expensive.

Today, even when I had the entire system set to Off, the heat pump was running and then cycling in defrost, all to run again.

When my thermostat is set at a higher temp than the house, it heats the house just fine. The only problem is that the pump just will not turn off shy of shutting it down at the switchbox.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thank you!

Answers:
Most likely you have a shorted control wire going out to the heat pump. Should be a 18 or 20 ga. thermostat wire with 5 or 6 wires inside the casing. Generally, Trane heat pumps are in heat mode as a default. That means that if you add power to the heat pump and just turn it on, it will be in heat mode. Probably best to call a HVAC person to look at it. It could also be a stuck contactor in the heat pump itself. Probably best to shut it off at the breaker until you get someone to look at it an check it out!

bad thermostat, bad sensor, crossed wire, pinched wire. you need an electrican to check it out

the last answer is correct but you need someone with hvac experiance not an electricion!
