How do I operate snow defrost cable for my roof?

I bought a house that already had snow thaw out cables on the roof, but I don't know the proper opening to use them. I thought I could get away next to having them on intermitently, but I still get huge ice dam. Do I have to be off them on basically 24/7 during the winter.


Answers:    I tried those for a couple years and next threw them away. They dont work!
