i have snaked out the main drain (clean out drain) in the basement twice and it still backs up what can i do?

this is a old house built in the 70's.

Answers:
If it is a root problem, snake out as much material as possible then use Hercules root destroyer ever 3-4 months or so. This will stop the roots from creating another obstruction. If it is a misaligned pipe you'll have to dig it up and replace the bad section.

It is very likely you have a problem with roots growing into your sewer system. When you snake it, this removes the blockage BUT the roots are not removed. If this is the possible case there are some chmicals and tools with cutters that could be used. It depends on where this might be happening as well. Both of these things are also temporary but the fix lasts longer.

when was the last time you had your septic system cleaned out. I am thinking that you have a regular septic system, not city sewage. you should have your septic system pumped out ever three to five years to keep it working properly.
The other thing you can do is have your line filmed. Some plumbers offer a service where they stick a camera on their snake and burn you a DVD of your sewer line. It cost roughly $100 in my area, not sure where you're at?
This will give you a better idea of the solution, you'll be able to tell if you have root issues, pipe damage, clogging, etc. Hope this helps
