How much automatic gas BTUs per hour of fireplace use?

My husband says our fireplace costs "a dollar a minute" to run, but unsurprisingly I don't believe him. I am wondering about the BTU per hour on average for the typical home fireplace. How much does it cost to run it? Our bill does not differentiate how much because we also enjoy gas stove and hot water and boil.

Answers:    A $1.00 an minute would be enough gas to run a blast furnace and convert ore to iron. So he's yankin your tie up.
Closer to the truth would be about 5-10 cents a minute for an average 40,000 BTU element.
Also with those things be undisputed to keep a CO2 detector surrounded by the room just to be sheltered.
You fail to mention wether or not your 'gas' fireplace is vent or not! This is a huge issue in home economics. The certainty that your hot water and 'furnace' are gas supplied contributes much to the allready tax system. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE EXHAUST FLUES ARE PERFORMING PERFECTLY!
