AC not working! Please, help! I have NO IDEA what to do!?

I'm sure you do not realize that even though your Compressor isn't running on your a/c that it is still energized. there is a relay inside the unit that is controlled by the thermostat, the thermostat senses it is too hot then the t-stat send power to the relay which then closes the circuit on your a/c unit. The power is there all the time it is just being completed by the relay so I don't recommend you pour any more water on the unit.
Also, an evaporate cooler ( swamp cooler) only work by drawing air into your house through a screen that is kept constantly wet by a reservoir of water that is splashed up onto the screen. In dry areas you cool your home by making the air moist. So you must live in the Southwest part of the country for that to work. IN humid areas you get no benefit from a swamp cooler.
AND, you are not creating a swamp cooler by spraying your unit, you are merely cooling the coils down when you spray the water on it. It isn't actually drawing air into your home, it is condensing the freon in your unit causing it to cool then that is pumped into your furnace unit/air handler which then blows air across coils filled with the cooled freon. This process removes moisture from the air in humid regions and that helps to cool the air along with the cold coils.
It sounds as if you need to have your unit recharged. It may possibly be a bad connection in the unit at or near the relay, but I doubt it because that would make it not run if the connection were too bad. But I would check the connection to see if they are tight in the a/c unit before you call a service guy. But be sure to turn off the power to the a/c unit before you check the connections. The ground may be wet out there and if you get shocked you will be on wet ground and could very easily be electrocuted.

you probably need it recharged with freon.
Sounds like your AC is overheating. You're gonna need to call a repairman. You may be running out of antifreeze or it's not insulated properly or something. Or maybe your electric isn't up to code. Either way, you need to call a professional. Sorry!!
In the mean time, cool showers, lots of fans, wear a damp towel around your neck. That's what we do to survive here in the SW desert.
Good luck!
You're creating a swamp cooler when you pour water on it. I'm sure that's not good for the appliance. You should call a repair person to come and look at it. It might need to be recharged or a filter changed.
The freon compressor went out in it. The compressor needs to be replaced. Only a qualified repairman is allowed to do that because of the freon in it.
Call an A/C Specialist all you may need is freon and you might want o put that call in ASAP because those A/C guys are busy as heck now.
is your thermostat digital? if so it takes two double a battaries on the wall unit, we had the same problem and it was thaT SIMPLE IF IT IS NOT DIGITAL THEN THE THERMOSTAT NEEDS REPLACING OR THE FREON IS OUT.
we have older AC's when they blow warm air and we call the repair guy, he always says it just needed freon, so maybe its freon
O.K.,
You are making your AC into what amounts to an "evaporative cooler" by pouring water on it. And yes, it's a bad idea.
Some HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) companies will come out and check your system to let you know what's wrong. It could be just that the freon leaked out, your thermostat is messed up, or a few other things. Check the yellow pages for AC repair companies.
Do you have fire ants in your area? They occaisionally damage AC systems as well... I'm not an AC guy, but you need one to check your system and let you know what's up.
In the meantime...
Evaporative coolers are fairly inexpensive as window units, and I think Home Depot actually has miniature units for inside the house. They do make the house humid, since they use water to cool, but if you need quick relief, go out and get one as soon as you can.
Check Wal-Mart as well, they're usually open 24 hours, if you're that desperate...
Good Luck!
If you adjust your air conditioner thermostat to a higher temperature while you’re out of the house during the day, you may be tempted upon returning to lower the thermostat setting to an uncomfortably cold temperature in the hope of cooling your house more quickly.
