A/C unit made several crackling sounds, caused my electricity to flicker, and will no longer cool the house???

Turn off the electrical supply to it. Open the unit up carefully and check for mouse nests or some chewed up shorted out wires.
Sounds like wiring problem within the unit. I wouldn't use it without getting it looked at first. At this point, any further use might cause a fire.

Sounds like the outside unit has given up the ghost. Turn the breaker off to the outside unit and call a pro. If you are not a electrician or HVAC person, do not try to remove covers and check it out yourself. Electricity can kill you. Be sure you get a second opinion. Make sure whoever you call has a license and can give you at lest 5 references who are not relatives. If they pull up in a 72 model dodge van with no hubcaps and their sign says "Uncle billybobs heating and lawn care", you better call someone else.
