Where is this water leak coming from?

I have a leak coming in from the corner of my kitchen ceiling when my upstairs neighbor uses her kitchen sink.... but her sink is not above my leak! I've called a plumber in twice and an HVAC guy as well (not including the guy who refused to look at it and the guy who swore he would be there by 6, but never showed). They all said they knew exactly what it was, snaked various pipes, charged us their fee.....and yet it is still coming. A friend who has been restoring her home said it must be a leak in the "stack". What the heck it that?

Any information on this or advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I think my poor fiance is about ready to strangle the next service guy that I call. ;-D

Answers:
If you're a tenant call you landlord every hour on the hour until it's fixed, and call the Health Dept., etc. because if it hasn't already it will cause mold which can be dangerous to your health. And you should request the landlord reimburse you for what you have spent so far.

If you're the owner;
1. If it's a new building look into the warranty coverage.

2. You can probably eliminate the possibility of it being a condensate leak from the A/C unit if you have already had the HVAC guy check it.

3. A leak often does not drip where the leak is, but flows down hill along the pipe and then drips and that's usually where you're going to discover it.

4. You need to figure out if the leak is coming from a water line or a drain line.
To do this, have your upstairs neighbor plug and fill up both sides of her kitchen sink and wait for a little while to see if it causes the drip in your kitchen. If it does then your neighbor's kitchen faucet is leaking and running down the pipes under her sink into the space between her unit and yours and can be repaired from under her sink.
If it doesn't drip then have her pull both plugs and drain her sink and it should leak meaning it's a drain line leaking. If so it could be coming from under your neighbors sink or from the drain pipes between your units in which case someone will have to tear off some of your ceiling drywall to find it and repair it.

5. Then you can email me for the address to mail my consulting fee. :-)

Good luck,
Bruce

are you renting?... if so, call your landlord & also have you upstairs neighbor call...keep after them because if it is left untreated it can cause A LOT of damage. If you own...ask around for referrals for someone dependable to call.
Good Luck & God Bless!
A loose fitting in the supply or drain line will allow water to travel along water lines till it drops. If you fill a large pan of water, if it leaks it is in the supply line . Dump the pan of water if it leaks it is in the drain line. Sweat joints in copper will work loose in time not done correctly.PVC or plastic glue joints or compression fittingsmust be replaced.
