I burned a mm deep hole in a wooden table by leaving a lit candle on it. whats the best way to get rid of it?

Should I sand it? I'm afraid that it'll leaving a 2mm deep crater in the table (it's old rustic pine wood, it's not mohageny). Is there a putty or a wood treatment / coloring that can mask the burned circle?

Answers:
The burn in the table is has already ruined the entire top. The best way to alleviate the problem is to refinish the entire top. You can do this in two ways. The First is to strip all the varnish off the table and then sand the table top to a uniform finish. Taking 1 mm of material from the top will not degrade the overall appearance of the wood. Use a 6" belt sander with coarse sandpaper, then switch to an orbital sander with ever finer grits of sandpaper to finish the job. Then stain with the color of choice, and finish with 2 light coats of clear coat. Your can wet sand the clear coat to bring out the best luster and polish with a good furniture polish. The other is to strip the table and use a good wood putty to fill the hole. Sand the area with an orbital sander, then refinish the top. I think the first is the way to go if you want to maintain the beauty of the wood. but the second is a whole lot less work.

I recommend using lighter fluid on the entire surface. light with magnesium. Let it burn about 22 seconds, and extinguish with carbon dioxide. Now scrub. It is important to scrub first then sand.
This should make the entire table 1 mm lower, matching the hole.
battle scar. Putty is no good for table top. Get rid of it at a garage sale if you can't stand to look at it.
Or you could try thick clear laminate over it, then smooth it out with propane torch to melt laquer evenly.
gives it uniqueness! a Table with a story!!
No.Putty it up.Very lightly dry sand if needed and a drop of stain...remember go light ,you can't go back.
burn marks are no big deal. but if you want a flat surface you could get a plexiglass or glass thing put on the top of the table.
Unless you want the effect of the old pine in the dining area decor you could cover the entire table with a table cloth. If the burn is located in the center portion of the table, you could buy a restaurant style condiment holder to cover the damaged area.

If you want to restore the table, you'll have to sand and refinish the entire table top, otherwise it'll look worse than it does now when you try to patch it. You could try this if you want to try it = turn the table upside down and using a rough sand paper, sand enough of the wood off the bottom to mix with some transparent lacquer and fill the burned area with it, use a fine sand paper to finish the patch. The idea here is to use the same texture and color of wood to make the repair.
Some specialty wood shop stores in the US "ShopSmith" have wood filler that has paper to absorb the new stain where it will hold the color better than the normal plastic putty, Otherwise, use the dust from sanding and mix with glue or plastic putty , it will absorb the finish more uniformly as well.
