Can I paint over cabinets that have been finished with polyurethane?

Answers:
YOU DON'T NEED TO SAND ANYTHING!!

B I N Primer by Zinisser. Use the shellac based one in the red and white can. ***CAUTION: Because it is a primer that sticks to glossy surfaces, it will PERMANENTLY stick to anything it gets on.***
It is the best product.

Other answers:
You should clean with a degreaser and scuff with fine sandpaper or steel wool.
You may sand the dried paint and re coat for a smoother finish if lines show through.

the paint will peel off
Yes. They make a lot of paints these days that adhere to plastics and that would work great for you.
Yep. You will need to take the poly coating off though using a sander.
Yes, but you need to use a specific type of primer first. You local paint or Big Box store associate will be able to get it for you.
Yes is the short answer.Make sure to sand and get rid of the shine. It would be good to know if the urethane is water or oil based to help determine what paint to use.
You have to sand them down first and then paint them with a coat of primer to prevent pealing. The polyurethane will cause the paint to peel so it's important to sand as much polyuretane off as is possible and then to prime to keep the paint sticking and looking good for a long time!!

Sure can i am going to in about 1 week, all you need to do is sand the cabinets first to get the shine off of them, and then paint um... Good LUck
You may want to use a chemical stripper on the doors, Prime it good with Zinsser primer H2Oil. This stuff sticks to glass!
probably. I think that you would have to scuff up the coating to allow adhesion. I would try and use a primer, such as KILZ. It's very strong(odor) and will even adhere to silicone.
Polyurethanes are hard and difficult to sand, but sanding is necesary. scotchbrite pads work well if sandpaper gums up.

There are all sorts of products which claim to work without sanding, and they'll work well enough to hold themselves. But as paint dries, it shrinks, which puts tension on the previous coat. Each coat of paint increases the tension until finally the point of weakest adhesion breaks loose.

Imagine what's happening on a microscopic level. When you paint, the paint needs to grab hold of something (this is known as a mechanical bond). Primer is made to have all sorts of little microscopic area where the paint can grab hold. Sanding serves this same purpose. Interior latex wall paints are so porous that there are lots of places for the paint to grab hold. However, Exterior most other finishes are smoother, and so sanding is necessary to guarantee adhesion. In those cases, sanding is even necessary for primer to have something to grab hold of (primer needs to bond also).

When sanding, it's not enough to just scratch the surface. Scratches are on a macro level compared to the bonding which happens with paint. You have to sand until the entire surface is dulled. Harsher grits do not guarantee better adhesion. In fact it's generally a good idea to not use so harsh a grit that the scratches show through the finish (it looks tacky)

Most paint store employees will tell you that sanding isn't necessary with certain products, because all they know is what the paint suppliers tell them. If paint manufacturers actually told people the truth about sanding, few people would buy the product because most people hate sanding. So most paints tend to downplay the importance of sanding. If they didn't, people would just buy someone else's product that did make claims to the contrary.
