my water heater is making a knocking noise, is this a bad sign???

Answers:
This is caused by the calcium build up inside the water heater. If it is not Too bad,the solution is simple:
For gas heaters turn off all water in the house, then shut th gas off at the heater. Once it is off turn off the water supply line to the heater. now connect a hose to the bottom spout on the heater and run the hose in a nearby drain. Turn on the spout and let it drain. once the draining has started and you find no "extra" water leaking, try turning on JUST the supply line. This may take several tries!! Be patient!

Electric is basically the same but you must locate the main breaker for it in your house. TURN THE POWER OFF FIRST!! Failing to do so can cause SEVERE DAMAGE! Turn off the water & go from there! You may want to try and Shop vac out the spout after it has completely drained of all water.

Close the spout turn on ONE water source ( I'd use an out side spigot if I could, but a bath tub will do. DO NOT TURN ON ANYTHING WITH A SMALL HEAD OR AEREATOR!! turn on water supply to heater and let it fill until you have constant water pressure coming out the spigot. Now turn off the spigot light it back up and hope for the best!
Elec. same just turn on power!

Sounds like you've probably got some air in it. As long as it's functioning and and not leaking, don't lose sleep over it.

yes, its sediment buildup
It could be your water pressure inside the unit...
yes. It's the calcium and solids buildup that makes that sound when it's heating. You could try draining a bucket of water out of the bottom, but it sounds like you'll be in the market for a replacement soon.
well you should probly have someone look at it i dont know but the socket may be old and it can make flames casue it sparks so have someone look at it....it could be dangerous
there is probably air in the lines try bleeding it if you need more help contact me
If it's knocking when no water is being used, you might have a stuck thermostat. This causes the water to boil and creates a knocking sound. You should have it checked out. If nothing else, it will run your electric bill up and could burn out the heating element.
not really, open the door for it.
you are going to need a priest to exorcist the demon out.
Usually not a problem, can be caused by some air in the line or more commonly by a small build up at the bottom of the tank.
The noise is usually caused by sediment in the bottom of the tank churning up when the water is being used. There is no need to drain the tank as was suggested by another. The best way to flush a tank is by hooking a garden hose to the spigot at the bottom of the water heater and running the other end to a floor drain or to the outside. Once the hose is in place open the spigot all of the way and let it run for at least 5 min. or until the water runs clear whichever comes first.
