how to install new windows in farrmhouse?

Answers:
I have done this in several houses. I will try to explain, but get someone elses input also. You need safety glasses, leather gloves, crow bar, hammer, mask and plastic to contain area if lead paint is present, the replacement windows, caulk, caulk gun, 1/2"x1" trim, 1.5" finishing nails, and an electric screw gun.
1. Measure from the inside of the tracks, ie the real size of the framed window panels for lack of a better description, both the width and the height of the complete window and subtract 1/2" from each measurement. Ask a window supplier to make sure you have made the correct measurements and order your windows.
2. Read the instructions which came with your new window. Remove the trim that is against the bottom window and frames up and around the top and sides of the whole window. This 1/2" x 1' trim can be removed by crow bar and hammer.
3. Cut the ropes that are attached to the bottom window and weight (use hammer and crow bar or utility knife). Remove the bottom window.
4. Now remove the inner trim which holds in the top window . Use a crow bar and pry it out.
5. Repeat step 3 for that window.
6. Either unscrew the pullies recessed into the top of the window frame and remove or use your hammer and smash them into the hollow recess.
7. Do not remove outer frame of window opening nor sash. Clean the frame of debris.
8. Place the bottom of the new window in first and push the top up into the frame.
9. Use the screw gun and screws which came with your window to fasten the top and bottom of the window into the window frame, make sure it is pressed as close to the outer frame as possible.
10. Generously fill the gaps with caulk all the way around the window.
11. Miter cut and instal trim with finishing nails. Then carefully caulk the new trim.

Should be a site on the inter net that shows a rough instal diagram. Hope this helps, it saved me ~$200 per window for 10+ windows.

Instructions and the required opening sizes will be included with the new windows..... real easy.... and each one you install will be easier than the last one....kinda like riding a bike.... go for it...........save about $200 per window! Minimal expanding "Foam" sealant works great to insulate and to stop leaks.......Install as many windows as possible then do the "foam" insulating.... one mess is better than several.....
Take one out and see what's there, but be careful not to open up a can of worms. The easiest way would be to take out the window but leave the sash, measure well and subtract 1 inch, put in new window, seal with spray foam, trim on the inside and cap with aluminum on the outside, caulk to seal.If rotten wood is found, try to rebuild it with chemicals.PC WOODY has a great line of wood restorers.Even auto bondo will work to replace missing parts.
