The best fertilizer to use is Scotts Turf Builder. When it comes to lawns the idea of an "organic" fertilizer is a bit foolish. It's not like you are going to eat the grass. A product like Scotts is primarily nitrogen in a slow release form. Because of the slow release feature, it doesn't all wash off into the drainage system. Secondly it is not going to contain weed seeds or other undesirable plant seeds.

I usually apply Scotts about half as often as the instructions on the bag says.
