have a briggs and stratton gas sm. eng which will not start. has fuel and oil,air fil. is ok?
Answers:
No need to change the oil or all that.... take the plug out and put it back in the plug wire and ground it to the engine and turn the engine over, watch for a strong spark. If no spark, then take the shroud off, pull the kill wire off the ignition coil and try again.... still nothing? then yeah, try a new plug but still the coil could be fried (if it was made after 1983, it has no point/condensor under the flywheel) now if it gives good spark after you pull the kill wire, then you have a bad safety switch, if it gave a good spark to start off with, try a little gas or starting fluid down the carb, if it runs off that, then you have a clog in the main jet of the carb(take it off, tear it apart, soak it in carb cleaner and blow it out with air), or if it has a fuel shutoff solenoid on the bottom of the carb, thats not working.
Now if it doesn't start off the starting fluid, but has good spark..... you may have a sheared flywheel key, the flywheel has to come off to get a good look at the key, just taking the nut off and looking at it isn't good enough. Get a oem briggs key if its sheared.
If all of this is good.... spark and fuel..... make sure you didn't kill the engine... and you still have compression (compression does insure the connecting rod is still intact)

check the spark plug
check the spark plug
Change the spark plug, change the oil, give it fresh gas, and clean the carburetor, at least change the spark plug & air filter. there may also be a stoppage in the gas line., if that is the case & there is a manual pump on the side of the engine pump it an extra few times to extricate the plug, you might want to run some jet fuel in the engine to clean out any gunk.
Sounds like it either got flooded or you need a new spark plug.
it could be the contacts or condenser that connects to the starter magneto,,or one of the wires that connect all this broke because of vibration,, did a valve spring break causing lose of vaccum,, take out the plug,, connect the plug and try to cover the plug to see better,, then pull the starter and see if you have spark!! and check to see if the plug is flooded with oil...and try a NEW plug
