general air conditioner questions?

I just got a small room air conditioner. My goal is to live as cold as possible, as inexpensively as possible. I've been letting the unit decide when to cool and when to just fan. Works well, but it's hard to find a temperature that keeps the unit on the right amount (meaning I want it to actually come on at night, but not the whole night). Also I don't even know if running just the fan saves that much energy. Last night I tried running just the fan, wasn't anything world class. In addition to fan vs. cool, does fan speed have any kind of impact on electricity costs? Because the settings for that are high, middle, low, and one touch, where the unit decides what speed to use.

Answers:
Cool your one room down before you go to bed. Than just turn it off and keep all your windows and doors close. Set it up and if it warms up over night it will come back on. But room should stay cool most of the night without a fan and a/c on all night.

Other answers:
no the fan uses way less juice than to actually cool the air. if you want to have it run as efficiently as people, don't turn it off. long as you don't allow the room to get hot, it won't have to do a lot of work to cool it off again either. but you might need to bring it back and exchange it for a unit iwth a digital thermostat that can keep the room at a more precise temp.

When you set your machine, it will run and shut the compressor off as it hits the desired temperature. What you really want to do is make sure that your temperature setting isn't too low or too high. If you set it to a temperature that is satisfactory for you, the machine will cycle on and off as needed. It will save you electricity to allow the machine to cycle like that. Setting it too cold will not allow it to shut off and it will cost you more in the long run. Setting it too warm lowers your comfort. You just need to find a balance. The fan does take much less juice than the compressor, but the fan itself does not cool the room. It just circulates the air in the room. By running just the fan, you won't be as comfortable. If you're going to run the machine on cool at the right temperature setting, I would suggest using the auto fan speed setting. Allow the machine to decide what fan speed to use and when. It will automatically find the speed that will save you money. Just like shifting gears on a car at the right time saves you gas. I hope this helped.
Window units do not tend to be very cost effective. On the other hand most of them don't use great amounts of power. Your window unit is a comfort product. If you want to save the most money, don't run it . If you want to be comfortable, turn it on. Go to your local hardware store and get a timer for your unit if you would like. Then you could have it come on an hour before you want to use the room and then let the thermostat do the work while you are in the room.
