what causes the toilet tank not to refill with water?

the tank of my toilet never refilled after my daughter flushed it so now the toilet is inoperable because there's no water. I know how to handle a clog but I've never seen this before!

Answers:
sounds like the needle float inside the filler is clogged. turn the water to the toilet off (clockwise) if you have the filler with the float the moves up and down you will see the little lever on the top. take the cover off hold a cup upside down on top of it and turn the water back on to flush it out. turn off the water after it has been flushed. then reassemble and turn the water back on. If you have a float arm the mechanism that the float bar screws into needs to be removed and flushed the same way.

i don't know but that happend to me and then my dad fixed it i think it may have a leak or something. but you should also call a plumber if you haven't got it fixed yet.

The float part in the tank is broke or stuck. Also check to see if the water is off at the wall.
a clog in the system
There is a little arm with a float on it, or a float that goes up on the post on the left. Either that is not moving or the filler is out. The filler is the post on the left that the water line attaches to.

To change that is easy. Turn off the water and drain the tank. Remove the fill line from the bottom outside and unscrew the filler. Check the height and go get a replacement, should be about $10 at a store like home depot...

is the water turned on to the toilet?
just get a new one
is it night? its to with the tide!
Did the chain come off? Is the toilet running?
The big floater/bobber thing needs to be able to come back up...it measures where the water level is currently at.
Not too hard to figure out. Just look in the tank...good luck.
take the lid off the tank and check to see if the flapper valve is down...Its the thing in the bottom of the tnk that the chain is hooked too
You need to change the pump.. it's probably old.

You can pick them up at Home Depot, they are easy to change and cost about $30.
check rubber stopper in tank is it running continuiosly or watersupply
look behind your toilet. there a knob on the wall. turn that. If that doesn't fix your problem I don't know what to tell you.
well if it is making a running water sound but just not filling up it will be that the flap in the tank is stuck open and you need to close it> if it is not doing anything it may be that the water supply has been turned off at the toilet< check to see if maybe the kids shut it off> there could be a clog in the line but that usually makes the toilet overflow.
if you lift the lid ..look to see if an object is stopping the ballcock from going up and down freely it should float up till it cuts off the water flow
When you push the handle all the water drains out. But if the valve that allows the water to come in doesn't open then the tank won't refill. That valve is located on the shaft the the float is attached to.
