Replacing my Sprinkler unit -- Do i just Unscrew it out of ground?

I have an Orbit Voyager II unit that is just dribbling water all over the ground and not popping out (it is gear driven popup unit that rises 4 inches from ground when it works normally but doesnt do this right now).

Can someone tell me, if i wanted to take it out from the ground so i can inspect what is wrong must i only need to unscrew the head portion counterclockwise? By doing this i believe the base of it (a long plastic pipe) remains in the ground. But the baffling part is by unsrewing it the only thing holding the pipe base in the ground is just friction of the dirt(i might be wrong since i didnt install my sprinkler system)? Because of that i wonder if the sprinkler can be unscrewed from its base and taken out

Answers:
1st and foremost, CALL A CONTRACTOR! Secondly, do not put back an Orbit head! Dig up around the head and grab the body. Bring it to your local irrigation supply house. Replace it with either a Rain Bird or Hunter.

Good luck! x)

Other answers:
Just unscrew it
Just unscrew it
dig around the hole so dirt does not fall into the opening once you unscrew the sprinkler head by turning it counter clockwise
I have installed an underground sprinkler system, using Orbit products. Dig 6-8" around the head and unscrew the entire unit. Replace with a new one - only about $10. While warranty might cover this, it might not be worth the effort. Good luck.
