Flooring Allowance in New Home?

We're buying a new house and need to ask the guy for a flooring allowance. Our realtor is no help and we have no idea how much to ask for, we haven't picked a flooring out so can't really get a professional estimate. How much should we ask to re-tile an area of 1500 sq ft?

Answers:
You may be able to call a contractor and get a generic estimate. Ask how much per square foot they would charge to install it. It should not matter if you haven't picked out the tile yet. He should give you a price plus materials. Then decide on what you want and add. Lowes or Home Depot may give you an estimate. Good luck and if I was your realtor I would find out for you.

Other answers:
first of all dont get tile unless its porcelain we have all tile and did two bedrooms in not porcelain and they are very hard to care for. The biggest cost in tile is the installation. If you call Home Depot they will tell you what it costs to install. or go in and just get an idea of high to low prices.

Figure double to triple the cost of the tile at Home Depot.
It depends on the type of sub floor that you have. If it is wood there will have to be a backer board installed on the sub-floor first. Each sheet covers 15sq ft and runs roughly $10.00 each for materials only. If it is concrete then just mortar, tile and grout. Now tile itself is a different story. Yes you can get tile for less then $1.00 a sq ft. but, be forewarned you get what you pay for. As a very rough estimate i would say anywhere from $7.50-$10.00 a sq ft should put you in the ballpark.
