Much easier maintenance. Lasts longer before needing repairs or replacing. In warmer climates, reflects the heat away from the house.

metal is way better....it is forever and also is not flamable like cedar. cedar does not last long and moss grows on it if you are somewhere humid!
the first three are all good answers, and the sound when it rains is relaxing.
I don't think there is one, cedar lasts for years--about as long as a metal roof would last, and a metal roof will be loud as hell whenever it rains
if your in snow country, the snow will slide off the metal. that is ok if it is not over the side walk or the drive way. if so you can buy snow stops, there are many types and styles. the newer paint does not fade like the old did.
Cedar shingles now come with a fire retardent on them. if your in wet conditions were moss grows, make sure you install a galvanized ridgecap, this keeps the moss from growing. metal is more but cheaper on labor.
Neither is "BETTER". They both have very different qualities.
Cedar has been a roofing choice for over 600 years! It offers a certain look, feel, and charm that metal will never match-
But, alas- beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people love the way a galvanized metal looks on an Acadian style house with large veranda.
Typically speaking, the metal roof WILL be less maintenance, offer MUCH longer life expectancy, be fire resistant, be able to handle higher wind speeds without damage and comes in a number of color choices that will last if you make sure you get a good quality paint finish.
My favorite metal roofing paint finish system is called Kynar 500. My favorite metal roofing substrate material (the actual metal the roof is rolled from) is called galvalume. When used together, a galvalume metal base with a kynar finish system, you have a roof that can legitimately last for 25 years between maintenance (depending upon how it is fastened to the roof structure) and maybe 50 years without touching it at all.
Metal panels come in what are called profiles. That is the shape of how they are rolled/bent. There are as many profiles as there are days in a year but you will see a standard R panel or PB-R panel as a common description for a roof panel used on residential.
The thickness of the metal substrate goes a long way in determining its life expectancy too! Some people use a 29 Gauge roof panel on residential. I do not like it as I think it is TOO THIN!
I personally like to use a 24 Gauge panel but will go with a 26 Gauge if price is the bottom line. You will find there is not really that much difference in price between the 26 and 24 but a fair jump from the 29. Believe me- if you plan to live in the house- do not use 29G.
Good luck and don;t be scared to use either system. The cedar WILL be much more maintenance over the life of the house but it is a look and style that can be worth it if you want it.
both will outlast you if done properly, the biggest advantage to metal is how fast it goes on once your ready to apply
