What do I do if my water main is leaking?

The water main meter is leaking from the gasket.

Answers:
If it is the actual meter, call your city water company, it is thier job to replace it, and refund you any extra costs of lost water. If it is between the meter and your house, call a plumber, it is your responsibility. Good luck

Call the city
Check with your City works dept, it may be their problem
call the utility company
Well, you have to change it of course.

If it is underground, or if the gasket comes before the valve that takes water into your house, you'll have to consult the municipality to either turn off the water, or help you out.

Otherwise it should be a pretty easy job.
Call the water company. It's their meter, they'll fix it
call the city and they should fix it
If it's on your side of the meter then have a plumber come to fix the leak.

You could try tightening the union yourself before calling the plumber.

If it's on their side then call your water company and they will fix it.
I assume you mean the house water meter, if the leak is on the outlet side of the meter, then it's costing you money as well as making a mess, if there are flanges on the meter, try to tighten the bolts, if the gasket is bad then you have to find the shutoff, it may be that the only one that you can use is the curb shut off,(At the water main), shut off the water and replace the leaking part or the whole meter if necessary, if your not handy with tools then you will be better off letting a plumber take care of it.
