my heating stays up even though the thermostat control is off. what is wrong?

Some central (air forced) heating systems have a further thermostat (inaccessible to you) within the furnace. Its purpose is to keep the fan (airflow) going for as long as there is some residual heat remaining in the furnace. If your heating system is not completely switched off (and I don't think yours is), and the weather is hot, then the fan keeps on going, even though the oil or gas burner is not burning, because it "thinks" there is still some warmth in the furnace that needs to be blown out.
Suggestion: Turn the ENTIRE heating system off for several minutes (use fuse). Then turn it back on again. If it still comes on, then you need a maintenance person, because either one of your thermostats is kaput, either the one in your living area, or the one inside the furnace.
