The architectural or fiberglass laminate shingles are heavier and made to last longer. They're going to cost more too. If you have hail damage, and insurance is paying to replace your roof, they can only give you the amount that it would cost to replace it with the same type you had before. So, if you had 3-tab and are replacing with architectural type, then you'll have to pay the difference in price. Whatever type of roof you decide on, make sure the contractor is licensed, insured, and reputable. A bad installation job can be worse than a cheaper roof.
