in your typical 3-way, you have a feed on one common and the light on the other, the remaining two in the box are your travlers.
if everything is disconnected and the circuit is live only one wire should have power, that's common # 1, if there is a bulb in the light fixture and you have continuity to neutral that is your other common, the other two (travlers) you should be able to ring out.

Here is a web site that will help you out with diagrams. Three way switches are easy in theory but a pain in the field testing by yourself. No one wires them the same way and everyone uses different colors for travelers and some people have the power in the light fixture and others in the switch box! Swhoooo.
