How open are gas lines usually buried?

We are sinking a pole to mount a satellite dish.


Answers:    According to the International Fuel Gas Code, they are supposed to be at least 12" below the ground and to gas grills, courtyard lights,etc. 8".
The lines coming up to my house are about 3 foot deep. I know because the gas company come out and dug it up due to a leak. Don't know around water.
