It depends on the climate your building occupies. They're great in winter because snow won't build up on them. They are more durable than asphalt shingles, they look nice and they can be relatively inexpensive.
As Beverly (the architect) mentions, moisture can be a problem with metal roofs, as it can be with all roofs. Metal roofs don't "sweat", but act as condensing surfaces due to temperature differentials. Use a good underlayment on top of the roof deck - problem solved.

It's cheap and a very famous architect named Maybeck favored metal roofs. The roof can be attractive but a shingle roof it always best. Metal roofs cause "sweat" to form on the underside of the metal roof. If rain gets in, the sheathing will all or partly have to be replaced. I agree with a very bright professor I had at Berkeley, Howard Friedman. It was 1981-82. I said a metal roof would be the best way to go. He said he favored a nice bucket of tar and then shingles. This keeps the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As he said, if water gets into any of the seams in a metal roof-the repair is costly.
There are several advantages. It will last 2 to 3 times longer than a shingled roof, more protection from damaging storms,winds,falling trees etc. Only disadvantage is price. They can be very expensive so shop around for color and installation experience from installers and of course price. They also look much better on your house and come in a wide variety of colors.
Shingles desolve in the heat quicker. I just had a metal roof put on. Color is nice. Leaves don't stick to it as a comp roof. When it rains it sounds so cool.
