Well I have been in the field 20yrs so here is your answer.
There are a few things you can do.
1st if you have your main line run 3 times a yr or so at 85bucks a time.
You could go to Home Depot and get A Machine for 289 With blades.
This way you could do it your self And do it every 3 months to keep up on it.
The machine you get there does a wonderfull job But it is not like the machines I have the cable's I have can take a real beating the ones at HD take a beating but not as much so if you do it every 3months you wont have to worry about getting a new cable.
If it is really bad right now I would suggest calling someone out to have it run with there machine.
Also call your local plumbers and ask for root-x Not rid-x
What this is is a powder that will foam up inside your line and kill the roots.
there is a differece in the 2 products.
Do this after you run the line the cutter will cut the roots and it will suck up the foam and kill them.
But remember this it will not FIX the problem you have it will help you out alot though.
There company who makes the product has a warrenty that if you use there product and if your line backs up due to roots they will pay for the cleaning.
The only other way to fix the problem you have and I think you know the answer is to dig up the line and replace it and it will cost some money.
Also if you can kind out the tree that is giving you the problem cut it down and have the roots removed. This is not cheap either unless the tree is Small.
If you have any problem finding this product feel free to e-mail me at
kos101@yahoo.com
And I would be happy to help you out with the product.
If your wondering I have used the product alot and I have had no problems with it. It does work like it says and I have had customers that have been useing it for 6-7 yrs and in that time they have only had there mine line run 2times in 7yrs. Not to bad considering they had me run it every 6 months. So it does work
Goodluck

Get a plumber with a roto tool. He sends a pipe through the sewer line, and at the end of the pipe is a nifty little blade that spins. It cuts the roots, and they float down the line. Not permanent, but pretty cheap.
Roto will work for now, but eventually the roots are going to grow to a point where they are going to crush and puncture the pipes or septic system. Then you got REAL problems.
The last time a plumber came out to our house he suggested using a product called RidX. You can get it from Home Depot or somewhere similar and you use it in your toilet once a month and it's supposed to eat at the roots. We haven't had to call a plumber out since we started using it about six months ago.
you can try to use a chemical to kill the roots, but this is not an area you want to go cheap on, once the roots clog or worse crack a pipe it will cost you a fortune to fix. Call a plumber or a tree service and have the roots cut out from the inside of the pipe
There is a product call RootX It contains copper which will kill the roots then they will rot away.

RootX formulation foams on contact with water to kill roots and inhibit growth, filling the entire pipe to reach the top where 90% of pipeline root intrusion occurs. From start to finish, a RootX application takes less than 30 minutes.

I've been battling a huge old maple for six years now, done the roto thing every couple months and the root x thing as needed, the tree is coming down this spring so i can have the crushed pipe replaced, my advice kill the tree now and save your sanity
